Biography

Professor Zhang Tong serves as a Chair Professor in Environmental Engineering at the University of Hong Kong's (HKU) Department of Civil Engineering, where he leads the Environmental Microbiome Engineering and Biotechnology Laboratory. Professor Zhang is also Professor by Courtesy at HKU's School of Public Health and Adjunct Distinguished Professor at Macau University of Science and Technology. His research interests include environmental microbiome engineering, antibiotic and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) within the environmental dimension of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) under the One-Health framework, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), anaerobic digestion and bioenergy production from waste/wastewater, and biodegradation of emerging pollutants such as antibiotics. Professor Zhang has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles in his field, got more than 45,000 citations and an H-index of 117 (Google Scholar). He currently serves as a Senior Editor for Microbiome and an editorial board member of ISME. Professor Zhang has received many awards, such as the First-Class Award in Natural Science from the China Ministry of Education (2015), Second-Class State Natural Science Award from the China State Council (2016), HKU's Outstanding Research Award (2020), HKU Innovator Award (2021), Golden Medals at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2021 and 2022, the Medal of Honor 2021 from the HKSAR Government, and the HKIE Grand Award in 2023. He has been recognised as a "Highly Cited Researcher" from 2018 to 2024. In 2023, he was elected as a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering.
