Biography

Dr Nason Tan, born in Malaysia and educated in India and Hong Kong, currently serves as Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). With a diverse background that includes roles as a humanitarian field worker, Board President, and Regional Operations Support Unit Director at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, Hong Kong, Dr Tan has accumulated 20 years of clinical expertise in tropical diseases and epidemics across various countries such as Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Borneo. His dedication to healthcare activism is exemplified by his involvement in critical initiatives during the COVID-19 outbreak in Hong Kong, focusing on assessments, mental health interventions in elderly care homes, vaccination programmes, and training efforts. Dr Tan's primary focus lies in advocating for vulnerable communities, addressing key issues including health equity, planetary health, mental health, HIV, HCV, substance misuse, and their integration into the wider public health landscape of the region. He is passionate in grassroots initiatives such as community engagement, community-based participatory research, implementation science, and advocacy. Currently serving as Climate Liaison Officer for the HKU LKS Faculty of Medicine, and the NAM-HKU Fellow in Global Health Leadership of the 2023/24 cohort, Dr Tan's multifaceted expertise promises valuable insights and contributions to the forum proceedings.
